About me:
I'm an aspiring librarian, currently in my third and final semester at the University of
Pittsburgh's Information School. My previous work and education were largely in wireless
engineering, which I still find interesting, but I believe my real calling is librarianship:
there are so many opportunities to make a difference, right now, and I'm excited to be a part of it.
I am a strong proponent of open access, intellectual freedom, and ease of access to information.
(If I could build tools to put myself out of a job, I would. We're not there yet, though.)
That said, I still enjoy the company of engineers and do my best to keep up to date on trends in wireless
and electrical engineering, even as I begin to forget the math. :)
Outside of professional life, I enjoy--or did enjoy, before I went back to school--geocaching, homebrewing,
backstage work with community theatre companies, making crafts, and gaming (primarily social games,
like Apples to Apples and Why Did the Chicken?; word games, like Contact; role-playing games, like
Shadowrun and D&D; and puzzle games, like Tetris, Dr. Mario, and Bejeweled). I love birds and find
ornithology interesting--particularly studies on bird psychology. I like to travel, and I hope that,
wherever I end up after graduation, I can do some canoeing and hiking.
My Wii friend code is 7214 7976 4589 3382. You can get links to a selected subset
(selected by my remembering it when I made the list!) of the social media I use on the
Links page, and please feel free to look at my
Blog,
as well. For potential employers: my
Resume (which is more of a CV, honestly)
is available, with links to relevant information and to papers I've had published. I also have the beginnings of a
Portfolio online, which you are welcome to check out.
My e-mail is coral (dot) hess (at) gmail (dot) com. Please feel free to e-mail me, try to catch me on Meebo
(also available under
Random Amusement), or comment on a blog post,
if you have suggestions for improvements to the website, or if you just want to chat about engineering,
library school, birds, games, or homebrewing.
Thank you for visiting my site!
